“The Tomorrow War” is the latest addition to the Amazon Prime Video’s ongoing movie catalogue. The Sci-Fi film was originally set for a theatrical movie release. However due to the ongoing covid-19 pandemic, Paramount pictures sold the rights to Amazon.

Arguably, the biggest name in this Sci-Fi action adventure is Chris Pratt. Who is known for his roles from hit T.V shows “Parks & Recreation” to movies like “Guardians of the Galaxy”. Also everyone’s favorite grumpy news editor J. Jonah Jameson played by none other than J.K Simmons is also in the movie. 

So, what is the movie about? Well the trailer below gives us a good idea of what to expect. It shows a group of humans have time travelled back to the present seeking help to win a future war. Thankfully this war is not with humans or the undead but with the Sci-Fi staple Aliens.

The job of any trailer is to get its intended audience excited. Fun fact, I am a sucker when it comes to Sci-Fi action-adventure movies. The movie has a runtime of 2-hour 18 minutes. Which means it should have enough time to flesh out its story. Especially one that deals with time travel.

Movie Synopsis

The short version is that, humans from the year 2051 have travelled back in time. 30 years to the present in order to deliver an urgent message. By interrupting what looks like the world cup final (football/soccer) match. Where they announce to the world that in the coming future humanity will face a war with aliens. The only hope, is if the soldiers and civilians of the present step up to fight in this future war.

The Review

Without spoiling anything too much with regards to the story or its character development. Let us start off with the aspects that I feel “The Tomorrow War” gets right.

• The writing of the movie especially the dialogues in certain places are the real stars of the show because they feel like something a regular person would say.

• The story is not bullet proof, but it does a decent job in creating an atmosphere where you start to care about the characters and start to get a sense of what it must be like living in that universe.

• The actors also do a good job in portraying their emotions without being overly cheesy and dramatic.

• The real hidden gem in the movie is some of the comic timing and dialogues, it does not come out of left field or is not forced. It is a welcome addition wherein the actors do such a good job that when the moments do come, it is funny and something that would be said in such a scenario by such a character.

• The special effects of the movie are decent and what is actually on point is the enemy sound design. You really get the heebie-jeebies when you hear them for the first time.

• The future portion of the movie looks and feels like we are on the brink of an extension. 

• The civilian characters in the movie do feel believable especially the character of “Charlie” played by the incredibly talented actor Sam Richardson.

• The movie does do a decent job to try and explain its plot gaps to the best of its ability. 

• The section process and how humanity is drafted into the war and the various fallouts of this war is handled well. There is a sense of mixed emotions that the main character goes through which is comes off in a meaningful and realistic manner.

Now having said all that, The Tomorrow War does have its moments where it does tend to fall flat.

• While having praised the enemy sound design, I feel the overall creature design feels lack luster, I mean it does not come off as truly terrifying. Menacing yes, but I would not call it as iconic creature design. 

• Now this my most gripe I have with the movie the whole time-travel paradox conundrum. I will try my best by not getting into specific examples of where I feel the movie breaks for me. But there are definitely certain moments where the audience goes like “What!? But you just told him **** and now he will go back ***** but then how would this affect the timeline?” ok my brain is hurting now.

• There were moments where I felt like the writers could have consulted some exceptionally smart people like Michio Kaku or Neil deGrasse Tyson etc. but I guess it is a movie in the end.

• So as humans we did get to a point of time travel but no future weapons as we were busy trying to kill the creatures trying to kill us, so it seems a little odd that we did not even try to use more heavier type of armory that we currently possess against the aliens.

Final Thoughts

In the end, the movie did not overstay its welcome. Infact it pleasantly surprised me by how decent it actually was. It had moments of terror and impending doom, some moments were genuinely funny, the chemistry of the some of the actors were on point. There were obvious What the **** moments that left my head starching but in the end, It was a decent movie which had me wanting to see it to the end despite its flaws.
